Furniture Repairs
When I embarked on my saddlery training, I never envisioned that I would be utilising my saddlery skills to undertake repairs to chairs. There are many types of leather repairs required, but I specialise in those that require stitching.
Chair repairs have become a good part of my business. My saddlery skills are required to restitch leather chairs that are made up with veg tanned leather panels for seats, backs and arms. Hand stitching has double benefits when undertaking some repairs:
1 – I can take on some repairs that have to be done in place on the frame when it isn’t possible to machine stitch
2 – stitching by hand means I can re-use the existing holes thereby maintaining the strength and integrity of the leather
Many of the repairs I take on are to chairs that have a familial connection for the client, but for some reason they have been neglected over the years. There is nothing more satisfying than taking on a project that brings back their chairs back into use again.
